What some call “stomach flu”: gastroenteritis

With gastroenteritis, there is inflammation of the stomach and intestines usually caused by a virus or bacteria.  The main symptoms are usually watery diarrhea and vomiting. You might also have stomach pain, cramping, fever, nausea, and a headache.

If nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea have recently affected you, YOU are not alone. The best ways to prevent the spread of gastrointestinal illness include:

  • Wash your hands often!
  • Avoid touching the “T” zone (eyes, nose, and mouth)
  • DO NOT share personal items such as drinks, eating utensils, straws, lip balm,  cigarettes, or anything that goes in your mouth.
  • And don’t forget…Wash your hands!

If you are experiencing nausea and vomiting:

  • To avoid dehydration, drink water, sports drinks, or broths. Juices, soft drinks, and alcohol should be avoided. Begin with sips and advance slowly.
  • As liquids are tolerated, begin eating slowly and with small amounts of  light, bland foods, such as crackers or plain bread.
  • Stay away from fried or greasy foods.
  • Avoid milk and dairy products.
  • Rest a while after eating with your head elevated.
